The business school of Queen’s University is launching a new master’s degree in fintech.

The Smith School of Business at Queen’s said its new Master of Financial Innovation and Technology program aims to be the first in Canada “to address the significant gap in financial technology education.”

The new program, which will begin in November, is aimed at professionals and provides training in finance, data science and machine learning technologies.

“Until now, employers hiring in the financial technology sector have had to choose between candidates who specialize in either finance or technology; it’s been a challenge to find talent with strengths in both who understand how one impacts the other, including the opportunities and risks,” said Ryan Riordan, finance professor and director of the new program, in a release.

“With the launch of this new program, we’ve created a unique educational path that bridges both sectors and equips graduates to succeed in a quickly evolving marketplace,” Riordan said.

The degree will take 12 months to complete.

Sessions will be delivered on evenings and weekends in a combination of remote and in-person formats.
